Our project will be titled Victoria on the Park in acknowledgement of the historical name of 5th Ave NW. Although officially established in 1914 as the community of Hillhurst, the first settlers began homesteading in the area around the 1880’s. Accordingly, the original road names, prior to the grid system being established, reflected these settlers’ predominantly English and Scottish heritage. While much of the community was a slough in the early 1900’s, Victoria Avenue was home to one of two east-west streetcar routes within Hillhurst, thus establishing its early primacy as an important route for mobility. While details around the origins of this name are hard to come by, it is a safe assumption that, just as the neighboring community of Victoria Park, this avenue was originally named after the Queen. As portions of the community evolve over time, we trust that developments such as ours will, in some way, bear testament to the rich heritage and history of Hillhurst.
